Visually see what people twitter about and where.

Monday, December 14, 2009 3:30

image I got send a link to this amazing site by a colleague of mine. It basically visually displays the top keywords people twitter about in a certain area. It gets displayed as a layer on top of Google maps (which most people know how to use already).

If you for instance go to Cape Town, it will show the main things people twitter about in Cape Town. This is really cool.

You can view it here.

World Photos: AMAZING!

Friday, December 11, 2009 9:47

Panoramio I came across an AMAZING looking site. Its called Panoramio.

It pretty much involves showing some of the MOST AMAZING photos taken in certain areas of the world. It overlays Google Earth, meaning you have a google earth map and as you browse around or zoom in, images related to the area will appear. It also shows the most likes images bigger.

This results in a very interesting effect where you literally SEE the world in photos :) Go check it out.

Fold a world record paper plane

paperPlane When we were kids we always had to sit in the classroom and study when we were not writing a test. Obviously this often resulted in us getting up to things which would keep us busy. More interesting things :) We would often fold paper planes. I remember one paper plane we used to fold. It had great airtime and manoeuvred in an amazing way. It had many “off springs” or versions and this one seems like one of those.

The thing is this version of that paper plane holds a world record. So I would say it’s worth having a look at :)

See how to fold this paper plane here.

Cheaper accommodation

My wife and I LOVE travelling. So whenever I stumble upon something interesting I decided to blog it – for future use :)

This site allows you to rent rooms from people rather than staying in expensive hotels. You can search for the place you want to visit and then view availability. I don’t know how safe this is… but at least you have all the person’s details. I will also not advice people to do this by themselves. Anyways. There are many sites like these – I know of coachsurfing – once again – I don’t know how safe (or clean) it will be – but if you have a STRICT budget, then I’m sure it will be ok. Just travel with someone :)

Squirrel photo gets huge attention

Wednesday, August 19, 2009 3:10

An Alberta ground squirrel is poised to become Canada's most famous animal after the creature inserted itself hilariously into a timed photo being taken by a U.S. couple at a lake in Banff National Park. Minnesota resident Melissa Brandts' photo was selected as nationalgeographic.com website's photo of the day Aug. 13, 2009. The image is set to go viral on the Internet after getting splashed this week on a host of media websites around the world.

This is SO funny. I saw it at the gym this am. Basically this couple set up their camera on auto focus and on timer. Then got into scene to take a pic of themselves, only to be surprised by a squirrel which inserted itself on the photo. (This happened in Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park-Canada)

The squirrel is now poised to become Canada’s most famous animal.

Your current profile imageThere are now many sites out there using this squirrel to “photo shop” images.
1) The top ten Crasher squirrel pics can be seen here.
2) You can squirrelize any photo here. (I haven’t tested it – own risk)
3) You can add it to your twitter image here. (mine now looks like the insert)

How to Build an Air Conditioner

I grew up in a LOVELY but VERY WARM place in South-Africa, called Tzaneen.

I often had the roof fan and normal fan on while having ice in my mouth to cool me down while trying to study! :) Ha – so when I found this article I thought I will add it in here for those who also live in VERY warm areas in the world and would be adventurous enough to try building their own Air Conditioner.

I have NOT tried this – so do it at your own risk :)

Jet lag calculator

Tuesday, August 11, 2009 3:01

British Airways logo.Have you ever had Jet Lag? Hehehe, it’s really terrible. I remember returning with my wife from our honeymoon in Thailand. We would fall asleep like 7pm at night… only to wake up again at like 4am (or something silly like that). It was terrible.

I would tell my wife to FORCE herself to stay awake at least another hour, only to fall asleep myself 10 minutes after my little “lecture” :)

Well, British Airways came up with a link to help with Jet Lag. If you want some advice on the best things to do to minimize jet lag, click here.

Travel Light with One Bag!

One Bag - The Art and Science of Travelling Light

There is this site which is dedicated to teaching you how to travel light :) I remember once showing a cousin of mine how to pack only one bag for a weekend away. I have always liked travelling light and just think it makes things easier.

I was once travelling thought Europe and I met this guy who was “back packing” with two HUGE suitcases… I don’t know what he was thinking :) Maybe people like him (and myself) could learn from this site.

Well, I haven’t read through a LOT of this site – so I can’t say its all 100% truth, but it does look like an interesting read.

Remove unwanted objects from your photos!

I came across this nice little online application.

Basically it will help you remove unwanted objects from your photos! How nice! I always get a bit irritated when I try and take a nice shot and then someone keeps walking in front of me… well, with this online app you will basically just have to take a lot of shots of the same scene and then the program will automatically remove objects you don’t want.

It will basically look at the difference of your different shots of the same scene and then you could eliminate what you don’t like.

I have not tested it myself, but thought it might be good to try… check it out here - Tourist Remover

Get the best exchange rates while travelling - using ATM’s

Growing economy

I thought this could come in handing for travellers out there. Since I like both Travelling & Saving money, I thought this would be good :) (copied parts from the original post…)

Making a withdrawal from an ATM is generally the easiest and cheapest way to get cash abroad. The biggest advantage is that all cash withdrawals are exchanged based on the wholesale exchange rate (usually reserved for very large interbank exchanges).

This rate is often 2 - 5 percent better than what you can get from exchanging traveller’s checks. In addition, local banks or money change bureaus will add on transaction fees, which can easily eat up another 2 percent of your money. (Although there might be fees associated with international ATM withdrawals – the rate should still be the lowest)

Hope this helps – got it here.
